The Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) Worldwide Overseas Compatriot Educational Organization Delegation, organized for the first time, visited Taiwan June 17-23. 16 persons in charge and officials of overseas compatriot educational organizations and the principals of overseas compatriot schools from 11 regions in eight countries came to Taiwan for study as part of the Delegation. As well as visiting the OCAC, the group took part in the International Conference on Mandarin Education; and also visited the Mandarin Training Center at National Taiwan Normal University, Cloud Gate Theater, Songshan Cultural and Creative Park, Dharma Drum Mountain Nung Chan Monastery, the Martyrs’ Shrine and other cultural and education organizations and attractions. The OCAC arranged for Professor Sun Yi-Fen to present a lecture titled Straight Ahead to Learn Chinese and Professor Fan Shi-ping to give a lecture titled The Current Cross-Strait Situation. The group members listened intently and interacted with the lecturers enthusiastically, saying afterwards that they had learned a lot.
The Delegation members visited the OCAC on the afternoon of June 19 where they were received by OCAC Minister Wu Hsin-hsing. Minister Wu thanked the persons in charge and officials of overseas compatriot educational organizations and the principals of overseas compatriot schools for their efforts and contribution with regard promoting Chinese language education. He said that the OCAC will certainly continue to be the most powerful backup for overseas compatriot educational organizations and overseas compatriot schools. He also expressed the hope that the members of the Delegation will keep in touch after they return to their places of residence and will share what they saw and learned during their time in Taiwan with the members of their respective organizations and teachers.
