The closing ceremony and farewell dinner for the 2019 Overseas Youth English Teaching Volunteer Service Program in Taiwan were held on July 26. 546 young volunteers from the US, Canada, UK and Australia received the Certificate of Volunteer Service from Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) Vice Minister Roy Yuan-Rong Leu.
On behalf of OCAC Minister Wu Hsin-hsing, Leu thanked the volunteers for using their summer vacation to travel a long way to Taiwan to serve as volunteer English teachers to increase the English-learning motivation of elementary and junior high school students in rural areas.
Under the Program, since 2006, 4,850 overseas youth have come to Taiwan to teach English as volunteers and more than 35,000 students have benefitted. The 88 participating schools are in remote areas or areas lacking teaching resources in 15 cities and counties nationwide. Leu encouraged more overseas youth to come to Taiwan to teach under the program so that it can continue to develop over the long term.
The OCAC began holding the Overseas Youth English Teaching Volunteer Service Program in Taiwan since 2006, together with the Ministry of Education, encouraging young people from English speaking countries to use their summer vacation to come to Taiwan to serve as volunteer English teachers in elementary and junior high schools that are in rural areas or places that lack resources.
