For the first time since the pandemic began three years ago, the Yokohama Overseas Chinese School resumes hosting its Mandarin Summer Camp in Taiwan once again, and the school's teachers led 32 outstanding students to Ming Chuan University for the program. Ever since 2012, the school has annually taken students to various universities in Taiwan for Mandarin exchange activities and collaborated with Chinese Language Departments at local universities on Mandarin teaching, to add fresh vitality to the traditional overseas compatriot school.
Under clear skies on the morning of July 11th, the teachers and students boarded a flight to Taiwan. For students who were visiting Taiwan for the first time, their hearts were filled with excitement and anticipation. Upon arriving in Taipei, their first stop was to visit the Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC), a long-time supporter of overseas compatriot schools, to express their gratitude for the OCAC's continuous care and support
In addition to Mandarin language classes, this year's summer camp also included courses in calligraphy, face painting, and other activities. Furthermore, students attended field trips to locations such as the Confucius Temple in Taipei, the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, and the Museum of Cake and Pastry, enriching their intellectual experiences and allowing them to apply what they had learned in their daily lives. What brought the students most joy was a special excursion to Leofoo Village Theme Park in Hsinchu before their return to Japan. At the closing ceremony, students marked the perfect end to their Taiwan trip with song and dance group performances.
The school authorities expressed that every year, when students return from the summer camp in Taiwan, they would show significant growth. Not only do they improve vastly in language skills, but they also become more independent in their daily lives and exude greater confidence. This truly exemplifies the ancient Chinese saying, "It is better to travel ten thousand miles than to read ten thousand books."
