As the fourth-largest economy by nominal GDP, and the world's third-largest exporter and importer of goods, Germany, officially the Federal Republic of Germany, has long been regarded as one of the most significant and influential countries in the world. With about 83 million inhabitants, it is also the most populous member state of the European Union. Known for its very high standard of living sustained with its skilled and productive society, a universal health care system and open-door policy of refugee, the country has consequently become the first choice and destination for many European immigrants and refugees. As of 2018, about ten million of Germany's 83 million residents are immigrants, which make up 12.2% of the country’s population. The largest part of them is made up of Turkish guest workers and their descendants. Influenced by Brexit, the population of immigrants from the United Kingdom also increase drastically.
According to the latest statistics of "Statistisches Bundesamt" (Federal Statistical Office of Germany), published in January 2018, the Chinese ethnic population in Germany is estimated to be 143,000, of which about 7,000 to 8,000 people are from Taiwan. Besides, about 30,000 refugees from Indochina Peninsula, holding German passports, came to Germany in 1980’s. Early overseas compatriots worked mostly as nurses in hospitals or engaged in the catering business. The recent Taiwanese immigrants are mostly professional immigrants, engaged in the trade of electronic devices, bicycles, solar panels, etc. In order to make overseas compatriots get together to help each other, and be able to form close relationship among them, there are approximately 50 overseas compatriot associations of different attributes in Germany. Most of the Taiwanese immigrants live scattered in the big cities like Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Köln and Bonn. In general, overseas compatriots take education affairs of the next generation particularly seriously. In the hope of promoting traditional Chinese characters and Taiwan's diverse cultural learning, there are 13 overseas compatriot schools in Germany, mostly scattered over the Southwestern region, being in close collaboration with the OCAC to pass down the important cultural heritage of mankind.
