Greater Los Angeles is one of the areas with the greatest proportion of ethnic Chinese immigrants in the United States of America. According to the 2020 census, there were 4.1 million Chinese Americans in the U.S, of which approximately 1.17 million were in South California and around 631,000 were in Greater Los Angeles. The Greater Los Angeles area also accommodates the greatest proportion of immigrants from Taiwan. The 2020 census report indicates that there were 263,000 Taiwanese Americans residing in South California, of which 167,000 were in Greater Los Angeles. In the State of Arizona, there were 17,000 Taiwanese Americans.
The State of Arizona was assigned to the center's service area on September 14, 2017. In the state of Arizona, Chinese and Taiwanese immigrants mostly live in Phoenix and Tucson. Phoenix is Arizona's largest city with approximately 1.6 million people as of 2020, of which 3.8% are Asian Americans. As of 2020, the top five industries were: real estate, finance and insurance, manufacturing, retail trade and health care. Tucson is the second largest city in the state. The population is approximately 542,000 as of 2020, of which 3.2% were Asian Americans. Much of Tucson's economic development has been centered on the development of the University of Arizona, which is currently the second largest employer in the city. High-tech and tourism are major industries in Tucson. Immigrants from China and Taiwan mostly engage in catering, real estate, and insurance business.
The Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association (CCBA) Los Angeles is the oldest leading association in the overseas compatriot community. It was established over 100 years ago. The CCBA has 27 member associations, including family associations, benevolent associations and social associations. Many of the member associations of the CCBA hang the flag of the Republic of China inside and outside of its premises to show their support for the R.O.C. (Taiwan) and the values of freedom and democracy.
The later formed associations in the community of Greater Los Angeles are primarily established by professionals who initially came to the United States from Taiwan for their education and became immigrants. Some of the associations were formed by overseas compatriot business people who immigrated to the United States from Taiwan. Most of these organizations are closely connected to one another and support the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan).
In the Greater Los Angeles area and the State of Arizona, there are approximately 110 overseas compatriot schools with a total 1,200 teachers, 25,000 students, and 2,000 staff. Furthermore, 88 of these 110 schools are also members of the Southern California Council of Chinese Schools (SCCCS). 45 member schools of the SCCCS receive textbooks from the Overseas Community Affair Council (OCAC) through the assistance of the Culture Center of T.E.C.O in Los Angeles (El Monte).
The Overseas Chinese Schools in Los Angeles set up the 「Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learning」in 2021. San Marino Chinese School and SFVCCA Chinese School were the first two established in the Los Angeles area that year. In 2022, four schools - American Chinese School, Cerritos Chinese School, Confucius Chinese Language School, and Torrance Chinese School - established the「Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learning」.
